The newest attourney at the world's most powerful law firm has never lost a case...but he's about to loose his soul...
Released in Canada in October 1997, this film was a big surprise, plot-wise. I expected it to be well plot out, as Keanu usually does pick extremely well written works to act in, but it was more amazing than I expected.
I'm not giving anything away. You'll have to see it to believe it. My theatre experience on opening day was one which will take a while to forget. My friend and I actually yelled when the big plot twist came.
The Devil's Advocate is about a young southern (Florida) defense attourney (Keanu) who is offered a job at a mysterious and large law firm in New York City. After taking the job he becomes wrapped up in a new lifestyle of constant work, and luxury. He starts to ignore his wife, Mary Anne (Charlize Theron), who is being haunted by her new surroundings, and it appears asthough his boss, John Milton (Al Pacino), is slowly stealing his soul.
This movie is based on a novel by Andrew Neiderman which is actually very different. (I know, I own it.) For one thing, the main character is named Kevin Taylor, and he ends up going insaine instead of his wife (named Miriam). I've seen this novel on a college reading list. I think it is worth owning. (Get the version with Keanu on the cover though!)
Now a Warner Bros. movie starring Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino.

John Milton, a poet in the renaissance, wrote Paradise Lost. This is an epic dealing with temptation, ruling in Hell being better than serving in Heaven, and many other things. Though I have not read it, I plan to and here I will give my opinion or provide details as to how Neiderman had such inspiration from this writer that he used similar themes and his name for his demon-character.
Meanwhile, if anyone would like to comment, please do. (The guestbook is realatively empty!!!)
-Keanu looks amazing throughout; wearing suspenders and suits, with a southern accent and named Kevin Lomax. Hello. My name is Kevin Lomax. (My friend and I said that every day for a month before the movie came out).
-The stuff Keanu does with "his wife" is so damn romantic and cheesey but cool 'cause it's Keanu and we all wish we were Mary-Anne.
-Committing suicide turns Ke into an angelic being...
-Al Pacino is amazing as Satan. You'll believe HE IS Satan.
-There's a character named Heath, and some people I know call me Heath...
-Keanu saying "let's play devil's advocate" (in real life) isn't just a figure of speech.
Keanu quotes:
"Who are you?" ["I go by many names." (Al Pacino as John Milton)] "Satan?" ["Call me dad."]
